The Little Mermaid (2023) Review:
“ANOTHER DISNEY LIVE-ACTION REMAKE?” Yes, we are yet again given an adaptation of a Disney classic that tries to cash out on the nostalgia that we hold for classic films we watched growing up. I went into this film skeptical of the need for another live remake but was surprised when I left the theater feeling satisfied that Disney didn’t mess this one up. This reimagining of the classic Disney tale captivates audiences with its magical elements, superb performances, and a narrative that weaves together familiar themes with fresh twists. While the supporting cast under the sea falls slightly short of expectations, the lead’s embodiment of Ariel’s spirit, Sebastian’s delightful humor, and the additions to the story make for a smoother and more believable plot, all brought to life by a charismatic on-land cast make this film a highlight of the year.
I have to say Halle Bailey’s portrayal of Ariel is nothing short of extraordinary. She effortlessly captures the essence of the beloved mermaid princess, bringing her to life with a mix of vulnerability, curiosity, and an unwavering determination to pursue her dreams. Bailey’s mesmerizing voice resonates throughout the film, delivering unforgettable renditions of classic songs while infusing them with her unique style. Her embodiment of Ariel’s spirit is both authentic and captivating, honoring the character’s legacy while adding her own magical touch.
In this rendition of “The Little Mermaid,” Sebastian the crab steals the show with his well-timed humor and undeniable charm. The film strikes a perfect balance by delivering jokes that are funny without being excessive, ensuring that Sebastian’s wit never becomes overbearing. The clever one-liners and humorous situations he finds himself in bring much-needed lightness and levity to the story, leaving the audience with a smile on their faces. It’s a testament to the actor’s comedic timing and the writers’ understanding of the character that Sebastian’s jokes enhance the overall enjoyment of the film.
One of the standout aspects of this adaptation is how it expands upon the original story, adding new elements that enhance the plot’s coherence. The new additions serve to bridge gaps and provide a deeper understanding of the characters’ motivations. By fleshing out certain relationships and introducing additional conflicts, the film weaves a tapestry that feels more complete and organic. These additions not only enhance the overall narrative but also provide a smoother and more believable progression of events, capturing the audience’s attention from start to finish.
The underwater world in “The Little Mermaid” can look great at times but mostly looks gray and dull which might be the explanation why the supporting underwater cast fails to leave a lasting impression. Some of the secondary characters lack the development and depth found in the land-based cast, making their performances feel somewhat underwhelming. Although their appearances are relatively brief, it would have been beneficial to explore their roles more thoroughly, giving them a chance to shine alongside the film’s leads. Nevertheless, this minor flaw doesn’t detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the film.
On land, however, the supporting cast flourishes, delivering outstanding performances that complement the leads’ portrayals. Notable performances by seasoned actors infuse the film with a rich tapestry of emotions. The chemistry between the characters on land is palpable, bringing depth and believability to their interactions. The land-based cast showcases their talent through compelling performances, making it easy for the audience to invest in the characters’ journeys and root for their triumphs.
“The Little Mermaid” (2023) is a delightful cinematic experience that successfully captures the magic of its animated predecessor while breathing new life into the beloved tale. Halle Bailey’s exceptional embodiment of Ariel’s spirit, Sebastian’s perfectly timed humor, and the seamless additions to the story create a smoother and more believable plot that leaves me to give this film an 8/10!
